How to get a Police Clearance Certificate in Sri Lanka?

What is a Police Clearance Certificate?

It is more like a statement that includes your information and your purpose is true and verified by the Sri Lanka Police headquarters.

2. Why we need a Police Clearance Certificate?

As an example, Police Clearance Certificate is a required document when you are about to apply for any kind of Visa. If you are about to visit or resident or employ in another country, the foreign party/ principal or the visa center will ask you to submit a Police Clearance Certificate.

Why you have to follow the online method for this process?

If you are following the traditional method, first you have to take a day off for this. Because your entire day is going to waste for this and it is better that you keep your distance from Corona Virus. Stay Safe. Stay Home.

4.What you need to prepare before applying?

i. Valid Passport: your passport has two pages as the personal details page and the country allowed pages. Take photos of each page or scan them as images.
ii. Your national identity card: take photos of both sides or scan them as images.
iii. Your birth certificate: take photos of both sides or scan them as images.
iv. Valid Affidavit: you have to visit a lawyer to collect this document. Take a photo of this document or scan it as an image.
v. Valid debit or credit card: any visa or master card which can use for online payments.

You can use your mobile device camera to take photos but a photo size must be less than 250kb so do not use a high-quality camera. Do not worry about the quality.

Make sure your debit or credit card has enough money to pay online. If you did not use your card for online payments before, please contact the bank and ask for help. They will help you freely.

5.What are the payments for a Police Clearance Certificate?

1500 LKR for the Police Clearance Certificate and 30 LKR postal fee. The total payment is 1530 LKR for one application.

6.How long it will take to collect the Police Clearance Certificate?

The Police Clearance Certificate will be received at the address that you mentioned in the application within a week.

Your application reference number, police clearance certificate number, transaction details, payment details will receive by you via email a moment after you complete the payments. Keep it saved.

7.How long a Police Clearance Certificate will valid?

A police clearance certificate is valid up to 6 months from the date of issue. After the validation period, you can renew or apply for a new certificate online. It is very easy to renew because you do not have to enter all information from the beginning. All you have to do is select renewal, enter the previous certificate reference number, and do the payment. So, keep it safe even after the expiration.

8.You must consider these before start applying.

Make sure you have all the required information and photos. You must enter true information, make sure spellings are correct. This application is a one-way flow. You can not get back or redo or undone while and after submitting. The Police will take no responsibility for the data you entered. So, take your time to fill information. No hurry.

Follow these steps if you are a Sri Lankan citizen, you live in Sri Lanka since your birth and you need a Sri Lanka police clearance certificate.

Click on the proceed button, follow the screenshots attached here.
Then click on the “login with google” option. Type your email, password and click login. After that, the website will automatically redirect to the application form page.

From here follow the numbers in the screenshots and the description below.

01. Select application type as a new application. If you choose renewal the entire form will change.
02. Nationality: Select Sri Lankan from the dropdown list.
03. Select your date of birth.
04. Enter your current age in years.
05. Enter your national identity card number. If your identity card number is like 123456789V format, enter in the “Nic No” field. Or you have the new format enter in the “New Nic No” field. Also, you have to confirm it by typing again in the “Confirm Nic No” field.
06. Enter your valid passport number and re-enter to confirm the number.
07. Country: in here, you have to select the country that the clearance certificate should address.
Reference: in here, you have to select the high commission or embassy or consulate that the clearance certificate should refer

Example: if you are about to apply for an employment visa in Israel. Select the country field as “Israel” and the reference field as “Embassy of the Israel-New Delhi, India”

08. These fields will automatically be filled after you completed 07.
09. Type the captcha text correctly. Mind the uppercase and lowercase letters. Double-check the information you typed above and click verify button.

After you clicked the verify button, the website will check if they have issued a valid certificate before for the same criteria you entered above. The application form will be expanded if you are a new applicant.

10. Follow your national identity card, type the exact name.
11. Gender: Male, Female. Select one.
12. Marital status: married, unmarried, separated, widowed. Select one.
13. Follow your passport, type the exact name.
14. Select the passport option. Because when you are going to a foreign country, your passport becomes your main identity.

15. Follow your passport, select the exact issue date.
16. Enter your present address in Sri Lanka.
17. Enter your purpose. Select what type of visa that you are about to apply.
18.  If this is your first time applying for the police clearance certificate, select “No”.

In this section, you have to enter every place of residence and the period. You don’t have to enter exact periods if you don’t remember. Enter as you know. Also, you have to find out what is the Police Area related to each address.

Example: Mrs. Dani lived in Kandy from her birthday to marriage. After that she moved to Colombo. Now she lives in Colombo. So, the information goes like this.
Kandy address (Kandy police area) – from: birth date – to: marriage date
Colombo address (Colombo police area) – from: one day after marriage date – to: today date

You need to click “add” button one-by-one for each address. As per the example above she needs to enter two times.

23.Address lines 1,2 and City: in here you have to enter the address where your police clearance certificate should be posted to. Make sure the address is correct.
·        Address line 1: enter house number.
·        Address Line 2: enter Street Names.
·        City: City.
·        State, Province: enter if you know.
·        Postal code: enter if you know.
·        Country: Sri Lanka.

24.Enter your mobile number, you have to enter twice to confirm.
25.Enter your email address, you will receive an email to this after complete payments, you have to enter twice to confirm.

Now you have to upload all the required images to the application. Read the description, choose the image and click upload. It will show a green mark when the upload is complete. Else you will receive an error message. Upload all the images as required.
Double-check your application, entered information, dates, etc. because after you click the submit button, there is no back button to fix something you missed.

After you click the submit button you will be redirected to the payment page. There you can do the payments. Follow your debit/credit card, enter details and do the payment.
That’s all, you will receive an email after this. The website will show you the receipt that you can download or print. Keep it saved. Your clearance certificate will be received to you within one week. If you have any issues with the certificate, please follow the email you received, and there you can find a contact detail.
